The Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Australia, Wishwanath Aponsu, together with Defence Adviser, Captain Sagara Udayanga, and Counsellor, Dinushi Rupathunga, attended a public discussion titled "Migration at Europe's Edge: Perspectives from Cyprus", held on 20 July 2026 at the Australian National University (ANU), Canberra.

The keynote address was delivered by Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection of the Republic of Cyprus, Dr Nicholas Ioannides, during his official visit to Australia. The event provided valuable insights into Cyprus' experience as a frontline European Union member state in addressing contemporary migration challenges, including irregular migration, international protection, regional cooperation and reforms to the European Union's asylum framework. The discussion also highlighted Cyprus' historical experience of displacement following the events of 1974 and the important role played by the Cypriot diaspora, particularly in Australia.

Following the event, the Acting High Commissioner had the opportunity to meet with Deputy Minister Dr Ioannides and exchanged views on matters of mutual interest relating to Sri Lanka and Cyprus. The discussions focused on the Sri Lankan community in Cyprus, existing cooperation between the two countries, including the possibility of bilateral Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) and opportunities to further strengthen collaboration in areas of shared interest.

The meeting reaffirmed the importance of maintaining close engagement between Sri Lanka and Cyprus and exploring avenues for enhanced bilateral cooperation in the future.

The Sri Lanka High Commission remains committed to fostering stronger international partnerships and promoting dialogue on issues of common interest with friendly nations. Actg. High Commissioner also presented a copy of his writing ‘Diplomatic Chronicles’ to the Deputy Minister.
