As part of its continued efforts to strengthen the longstanding cultural, religious, and people-to-people ties between Sri Lanka and Myanmar, the Embassy of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in Yangon organized a special religious and cultural programme on 04 July 2026 at the renowned Pa-Auk Taw Ya (Htauk Kyant) Buddhist Academic and Meditation Institute, under the guidance of the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Myanmar, Mrs. Prabashini Ponnamperuma.

The Embassy hosted a series of religious observances throughout the day, including the offering of Heel Dānaya (breakfast alms), Dahawal Dānaya (midday alms), Atapirikara Pūjā, and Gilanpasa Pūjā (evening medicinal offerings) to approximately 255 venerable meditation monks at the Pa-Auk Tawya International Buddhāsāsana Academic and Meditation Centre – Pa-Auk Tawya Branch, Hmwe Bi Township, Yangon. The programme was conducted under the guidance and blessings of the Chief Venerable Thero, the Most Ven.  Kavisāra, the Head of the Buddhist Academic and Meditation Institute.

The religious programme also featured a Dharma sermon, providing an opportunity for the devotees to cultivate merit while further highlighting the enduring spiritual and religious bonds between Sri Lanka and Myanmar, through the teachings of the Buddha.

A Sri Lankan Buddhist monk, Ven. Dhiradhammā Lankāra who is currently residing at the monastery and engaged in teaching Buddhism, in the Myanmar (Burmese) language, delivered the Dharma discourse/Anusasana. His sermon reflected the valuable contribution of Sri Lankan Buddhist clergy to the promotion of Theravāda Buddhism in Myanmar, and also further strengthen the centuries-old religious and cultural ties shared between the two countries.

The programme was attended by members of the Sri Lankan community residing in Myanmar, whose enthusiastic participation contributed significantly to its success. Their presence reflected the spirit of devotion, goodwill, and unity while reaffirming their commitment to preserving and promoting the shared Buddhist and cultural heritage of Sri Lanka and Myanmar.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka remains committed to organizing similar initiatives aimed at promoting religious and cultural diplomacy, fostering greater mutual understanding, and further strengthening the historic friendship and religious relations between Sri Lanka and Myanmar.
